1. Giới thiệu chung về 570 Academic Word List for IELTS
570 từ vựng Academic là một danh sách các từ mang tính học thuật – chúng là các đơn vị nền móng tạo nên một bài Reading Passage trong phần thi Đọc, hay là những từ “thông minh” hơn nên dùng trong phần Viết.
Ngoại lệ có thể sẽ là phần Nói – nơi mà bạn được phép sử dụng các ngôn ngữ đời thường, hoặc phần nghe (vì mặc dù có xuất hiện, nhưng các ngôn ngữ academic trong Listening không quá nhiều).
Những từ vựng mà bà Coxhead lựa chọn xuất hiện thường xuyên trong nhiều chủ đề học thuật. Ví dụ: nghiên cứu luận (gồm lịch sử, tâm lí học, xã hội học, ..), thương mại (gồm kinh tế, marketing, quản lí, ..), luật và khoa học (gồm sinh học, khoa học máy tính, toán, ..).
Chính vì vậy nó khá hữu ích cho mọi đối tượng học ngôn ngữ thứ hai bất kể chuyên ngành học của họ là gì.
2. Phương pháp học 570 Academic Word List for IELTS
2.1. Học từ xong cần được ôn tập và sử dụng
Khi tinh thần bạn lên cao “Hôm nay mình sẽ học 10 từ vựng tiếng Anh” và bạn nhớ được 10 từ trong ngày nhưng các ngày sau bạn không ôn tập lại thì chắc chắn “lạc trôi” ngay lập tức. Bạn muốn từ vựng trôi vào dĩ vãng thì hãy tránh nhắc lại từ vựng đó và tuyệt đối không sử dụng nó trong bất cứ văn cảnh nào. Vì thế ôn tập là điều tối quan trọng giúp bạn học thuộc từ mới tiếng Anh nhanh nhất.
2.2. Học từ vựng tiếng Anh theo chủ đề
Nhiều khi bạn hay nghĩ bản thân cần phải học hơn 1000, 1500, … hay thậm chí 3000 từ vựng mới đủ tự tin để giao tiếp với mọi người. Cũng chính bởi những ý nghĩ này sẽ khiến bạn nản lòng.
Thế nhưng, ở một góc độ khác thì bạn chỉ cần nắm vững từ vựng của chủ đề tiếng Anh trong giao tiếp thì bạn đã rất đơn giản trong vấn đề giao tiếp rồi. Hơn nữa, với từ vựng tiếng Anh theo chủ đề sẽ có rất nhiều lợi ích mang lại cho bạn như:

2.3. Học từ từ theo trình độ và phát triển dần lên
Không nên ép bản thân học ở trình độ cao. Bạn nên biết mình đang ở level nào để chọn chương trình học phù hợp. Theo đó, bạn sẽ đặt ra list những từ cần học theo trình độ đó. Tuyệt đối đừng gom tất cả các từ vào bởi bạn sẽ không thể nhớ hết được.
Thông thường, nếu bạn chỉ mới bắt đầu học, bạn nên học các nhóm A1 – A2 để cảm nhận và định hướng phương pháp ghi nhớ phù hợp. Dần dần, khi đã quen rồi bạn có thể nâng mức học lên để phù hợp với khả năng nhé. Trong quá trình học cần ghi nhớ đừng ép bản thân học thuộc lòng, học vẹt. Mà thay vào đó phải tập để chúng trở nên quen thuộc. Đó mới là cách học từ vựng tiếng Anh hiệu quả mà bạn cần ghi nhớ.
2.4. Thường xuyên đọc sách báo và xem video tiếng anh
Đọc sách báo và xem video tiếng Anh thường xuyên được xem là phương pháp học hiệu quả lại không áp lực. Song bạn cũng cần chú ý cách học từ 2 kênh này chứ nếu không thì kết quả cũng chẳng đáng bao nhiêu.
- Đừng vội nghe theo lời khuyên: đọc bất cứ sách gì, xem bất cứ thể loại nào mà bạn thích. Tin tôi đi, bạn sẽ thấy đó là sai lầm trừ phi trình độ tiếng Anh của bạn đã đủ tốt.
- Bắt đầu với những chủ đề đơn giản, quen thuộc thay vì thông tin đồ sộ, chuyên ngành.
- Không nên kè kè từ điển để tra mỗi khi gặp từ mới. Việc tra cứu liên tục sẽ làm gián đoạn tư duy, khiến khả năng tiếp nhận thông tin hạn chế hơn. Bạn có thể đánh dấu từ chưa hiểu, hoặc dựa vào những từ liên quan trong câu, trong ngữ cảnh để đoán ý. Sau khi xem xong bạn có thể tra một lượt là tốt nhất.
2.5. Học các dạng thức khác nhau của từ
Thay vì chỉ ghi nhớ duy nhất một tầng nghĩa hay một cách dùng cơ bản của từ, bạn nên học nhiều dạng thức của từ. Học một biết nhiều, đó chính là hiệu quả thu được của phương pháp này.
Bạn có thể kẻ bảng chia thành 4 – 6 cột nhỏ, mỗi cột sẽ định danh là noun, verb, adj, adv và synonyms, antonyms nếu bạn thấy cần. Với mỗi từ học, bạn ghi đầy đủ từng dạng thức vào từng cột tương ứng. Như vậy chỉ 1 từ bạn đã có thể biết thêm được nhiều từ nữa với ý nghĩa tương đồng đấy.
